Types of Cocktails

The cocktails are known to be a type of mixed drink but all drinks can’t be recognized as cocktails. Cocktails are generally known to contain varied types of liquor added with different flavors including fruit juices, sauces, honey, milk, cream or spices and cocktails tended to become more popular with the Prohibition in the US and it became all the more popular due to the art of mixing drinks which became more important so as to hide the taste of alcohol. The bartenders tend to mix the cocktails with both the alcoholic and non alcoholic ingredients and following the removal of the Prohibition the cocktail mixing skills became all the more widespread in the bars and this commenced the golden age for the popularity of the cocktails. Types of Cocktails

In fact until the 1970s the mixing of cocktails took place with gin and whiskey or even rum while the usage of vodka was comparatively less common and currently the vodkas mixed with vodka were known to be made with gimlet or martini traditionally. Presently cocktails are known to be made with the other alcoholic ingredients like those of beer, brandy or even tequila. These types of cocktails are known to contain more of the alcohol content and are different from those cocktails which are made from by mixing the non alcoholic fruit juices and fruit punches. The other types of cocktails containing more alcoholic content are known to be made by mixing them with vodka, whisky. On the other hand the cocktails containing wine tend to have mild alcoholic effect and are more expensive as well.

The flaming beverages among the cocktails are different classes and tend to represent less alcohol content and the mixed drinks are known to be among the most widely consumed cocktail drinks by women specifically as they tend to contain less amount of alcohol. Cocktails are mostly known to be a stimulating drink or liquor made of spirits, sugar and bitters.

The usage of the word cocktail dates back to the year 1803 in Balance and Columbian Repository. Sazerac is among the oldest of the cocktails known to us. The bartenders’ guide has also mentioned a few recipes of cocktail in 1862. Professor Jerry Thomas’s book How to Mix Drinks also mentions the recipe of a few drinks. The book mentioned drinks like, Sling, Shrubs, Toddies, Punches, Sours, Flips and several other types of mixed drinks and along with those different sorts of cocktails (most probably 10).

Cocktail is a blend of a percentage of alcohol and myriads of other elements added to it to enhance the taste of the drink. This way not only the taste of the drink is enhanced, but the drink is made milder.
